Somalia, U.S. Forces Strike Al-Shabaab Targets in Jubaland

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has said it worked with U.S. forces to carry out an airstrike against Al-Shabaab in the southern Jubaland region, describing the operation as part of ongoing efforts to weaken the militant group.

The strike hit a target about 40 km north-east of the port city of Kismayo, according to Somali officials and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). Assessments of damage inflicted on the militants are under way.

Somali authorities said the operation demonstrates the strength of cooperation with international partners in combating terrorism.

“This strike reflects the government’s commitment to eliminate al Shabaab and restore peace across the country,” a government statement said.

Details of the units or assets involved were not disclosed to maintain operational security.

Al-Shabaab has come under mounting pressure from joint Somali and partner forces in recent years which has degraded their ability to conduct attacks in the country.
