Somalia, UN and AU Reaffirm Support for Somali-Led Security Operations
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia, the United Nations and the African Union have reaffirmed their commitment to joint coordination and logistical support for Somali-led security operations, as the country works to strengthen its forces and assume greater responsibility for national security.
The commitment was restated during talks at Villa Somalia between National Security Adviser Hagi Awes Ahmed, the acting head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), Qurat-ul-Ain Sadozai, and African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Force Commander Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma.
The three officials underscored the importance of the tripartite mechanism as a platform for improving coordination between the Somali government, the UN and the African Union, particularly in providing the logistical support required for security operations.
They also reaffirmed the need for sustained international assistance to Somalia’s security transition and long-term stability, according to a statement from the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The discussions come as Somali forces continue to take on security responsibilities previously held by international troops, with AUSSOM supporting operations against Al-Shabaab and efforts to stabilise areas recovered from the militant group.
UNSOS plays a key role in the mission by providing logistical support to AUSSOM and Somali security forces. Continued coordination among the three institutions is therefore central to sustaining operations as Somalia gradually assumes a greater role in its own security.
The meeting highlighted the shared commitment to maintaining international support during the transition, at a time when Somali forces face the challenge of sustaining operations, securing strategic locations and preventing Al-Shabaab from regaining ground.
