GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Senior Somali government officials and United Nations representatives met in Mogadishu on Monday to begin planning the transfer of the UN Transitional Mission in Somalia’s (UNTMIS) Human Rights and Protection Group (HRPG) mandate to national authorities.

The discussions focused on establishing a framework for a smooth and coordinated handover to the Federal Government of Somalia and the UN Country Team, ahead of the mission’s scheduled withdrawal in October 2026.

Officials emphasized the need to consolidate gains made in human rights protection and to ensure the transition aligns with Somalia’s national development priorities.

UNTMIS was established to support Somalia’s political transition and security stabilization. As its mandate winds down, stakeholders aim to maintain continuity in human rights oversight and accountability.
