Somalia, UN Review Plans for Final Phase of UNTMIS Transition
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and the United Nations have emphasised the need to protect gains in peacebuilding and state-building as the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) moves towards the final phase of its transition.
The commitment emerged during talks in Mogadishu on Thursday, where officials discussed preparations for the transfer of responsibilities, recent political and security developments, and measures to strengthen Somali government institutions.
The meeting brought together Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, and a UN delegation led by Raisedon Zenenga, the acting head of UNTMIS.
Both sides highlighted the importance of ensuring that the transition supports Somalia’s institutional development and does not undermine progress achieved in peacebuilding and state-building.
Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to a Somali-led transition, with national institutions expected to assume appropriate responsibilities as the UN mission adjusts its role in the country.
The discussions also underscored the importance of continued coordination between the Federal Government and the United Nations to support institutional capacity and maintain progress on Somalia’s political and security priorities.
Omar welcomed the UN’s longstanding partnership with Somalia and acknowledged its contribution to peacebuilding and state-building efforts.
The talks reflect continued engagement between Somalia and the United Nations as both sides work to navigate the final phase of the UNTMIS transition while strengthening the capacity of national institutions.
