Somalia Urges Caution on Sea Activity as Monsoon Period Starts

GOOBJOOG NEWS | NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somali government has warned fishermen to be wary of strong winds expected from today as the monsoon period, characterised by heavy winds, kicks in.

The Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport said high waves and powerful gusts, which could pose serious risks to maritime activity will be witnessed from today. The ministry has advised all stakeholders—including traders, fishermen, and vessel owners—to exercise extreme caution, particularly with small boats and vessels under 1,500 metric tons.

The ministry also warned members of the public to avoid swimming in the beach areas during this period.

The timing and intensity of monsoons are influenced by factors like the position of the monsoon trough, large-scale atmospheric phenomena like the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and the location of low-pressure systems
