GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somalia has welcomed the adoption of a resolution addressing Islamophobia and the appointment of a special envoy by the Un General Assembly, terming it a ‘significant stride towards fostering dialogue, fostering tolerance, and addressing entrenched biases that threaten social cohesion and harmony worldwide.’

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the adoption of the resolution would go a long way in safeguarding the rights and dignity of Muslim populations and advancing principles of equality and justice on the international stage.

“This landmark decision underscores a unified global dedication to combating prejudice and hostility directed towards Muslim communities, and signals a collective endeavor towards fostering a world characterized by inclusivity and mutual understanding,” the statement read in part.

While reaffirming its unwavering support for international endeavors aimed at countering extremist ideologies and dismantling their financial infrastructures, Somalia emphasizes the imperative of promoting dialogue and peace among nation, the statement added.

The UN General Assembly unanimously endorsed the resolution ‘Measures to Combat Islamophobia’ drafted by Pakistan on Saturday. The Assembly ‘condemned the incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence against Muslims as manifested in the increasing number of incidents of desecration of their holy book; attacks on mosques, sites and shrines; and other acts of religious intolerance, negative stereotyping, hatred and violence. ‘

However, some states were opposed to the wording of the text arguing that it should not be focused exclusively on Islam but on all religions.
