GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has said it welcomes the move by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to adopt Resolution No. 2728, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

In a statement, the Federal Government stated that the call for a ceasefire especially during the sacred month of Ramadan, was a crucial step towards fostering peace and stability in the region.

It adds that as a responsible member of the international community, Somalia urges for robust support and commitment from all stakeholders to ensure the success of this resolution.

“Somalia vehemently advocates for an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the safe return of displaced individuals to their homes, and the realization of a viable two-state solution. Sustainable peace and security in the region can only be achieved through genuine dialogue and mutual respect,” the statement reads.

On Monday, the UNSC adopted the resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas after the United States abstained from the vote, sparking a spat with its ally Israel.

The remaining 14 council members voted for the resolution – proposed by the 10 elected members of the body – that also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. There was applause in the council chamber after the vote.

“This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres posted on social media.
