GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU:  The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed a resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council approving a transition of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) into a transitional mission.

On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2753 (2024), that will transform the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) into the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), marking the beginning of a planned two-year drawdown of UN operations in the country.

All members of the Security Council endorsed the resolution, which stipulates that the Federal Government of Somalia will assume responsibility for UNSOM’s current functions over the two-year transition period, supported by various UN agencies operating in the country.

Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted the proposal in August, as an outcome of extensive negotiations between the Federal Government of Somalia and UNSOM, facilitated by a joint technical committee.

The resolution was forwarded to UN Secretary-General António Guterres following these consultations.

The successful transition is seen as a significant diplomatic achievement for Somalia, marking an important step toward greater self-governance and sovereignty over its national political and security affairs.
