Somalia wins against Kenya in maritime case
GOOBJOOG NEWS|THE HAGUE: The International Court of Justice has ruled in Somalia’s favour in the seven-year-long maritime case rejecting Kenya’s boundary delimitation method and virtually all claims it presented at the UN court.
The Court ruled that the equidistant rule which Somalia had proposed was the legally acceptable method in settling the continental shelf boundaries contrary to Kenya’s parallel to the latitude option.
The Court also held that none of Kenya’s rights including fisheries and security would be affected should the boundary be adjusted in Somalia’s favour.
But the global Court also struck a compromise adjusting the equidistant line from a ratio of 1:1.43 in Somalia’s favour to 1:1.3 in favour of Kenya.
