Somalia, UNDP to Boost Disaster Response Through Improved Data Systems

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have agreed to deepen their partnership, with a renewed focus on data collection to improve disaster preparedness and humanitarian response across the country.
The agreement was reached during a meeting on Thursday in Mogadishu between SoDMA Commissioner Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle and a visiting UNDP delegation led by Titus Kuuyuor.
Both sides emphasized the importance of accurate and timely data in planning and delivering effective relief operations, particularly in a country frequently impacted by drought, flooding, and displacement.
“Our collaboration with UNDP is vital to building resilience and improving disaster management in Somalia,” Abdulle said, expressing gratitude for the agency’s continued support. “Their technical expertise and long-term commitment are critical to our national preparedness and response strategies.”
The meeting concluded with a commitment to hold a follow-up technical session aimed at identifying areas for operational improvement and aligning joint initiatives for greater impact.
UNDP has played a key role in supporting Somalia’s state-building and humanitarian efforts, including capacity-building for national institutions and crisis recovery programs.
The enhanced cooperation comes as Somalia faces growing climate-related challenges and seeks to build a more coordinated and data-driven approach to emergency management.
