Somalia’s Foreign Minister Says Al-Shabaab Weakened After Two Years of Military Pressure

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi said on Monday that the Al-Shabaab militant group has been significantly weakened after two years of sustained military offensives and coordinated efforts to dismantle its financial networks and ideological influence.
Speaking at an event held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Mogadishu, Fiqi praised the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) for their bravery and resilience, describing them as the “backbone of Somalia’s security and sovereignty.”
To demonstrate solidarity, the Ministry donated a truckload of dry food supplies to support troops stationed on the frontlines.
“It is impossible for terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab to control Somalia. Our people have shown extraordinary courage in rejecting extremism and standing firm for justice,” the minister said, calling on political leaders and the broader public to continue backing the military’s efforts.
Fiqi also offered prayers for the soldiers who lost their lives in the fight, asking for divine blessings for the martyrs and swift recovery for the wounded.
He stressed that the fight against Al-Shabaab is not just a military campaign but a national cause that demands the full support of every citizen.
“Our armed forces, whether defending strategic positions or leading liberation operations, are securing the future of this country,” he added.
Somalia has ramped up its military operations against Al-Shabaab over the past two years, bolstered by domestic reforms and international support aimed at restoring stability and reclaiming territory long held by the insurgents.
