Somalia’s international partners urge all Somali stakeholders to work together to hold elections on time
The International Community has announced new elections in 2020, calling on the Federal Government of Somalia and regional governments to work together to held election timely.
A statement from the International Community, Somalia expected to hold credible and timely elections for the Federal Parliament and the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The International Community has stated that it is important to co-operate with the Federal Government of Somalia and the regional governments to achieve reliable election and to overcome the insecurity facing the nation.
Electoral law
The Somali federal electoral law ratified by Parliament and signed by the President Farmajo on February 20th. This bill is part of the basic electoral process necessary to hold national elections that will allow a maximum number of citizens to vote.
Although this is an important step for Somalia still much needed to do to implement the Act necessarily.
National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC)
Somalia partners agreed the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) responsible to implement the electoral law and emphasized tightening as soon as the need for all parties pertinent including the Federal Government, Regional governments, the Federal Parliament, and political parties to work together, with the support of the (NEC) in the process of electoral law enforcement.

Somalia’s International partners reflect on the Speakers of the two Houses of the Federal Parliament, as well as the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) Federal President and the Prime Minister to discuss the content of the proposed legislation. These categories include the declaration of the constituency and the allocation of seats to the constituencies and vetting of seats for women to ensure at least 30 per cent representation, electoral systems for Somalilanders, and the representation of the residents of Benadir region in Parliament.
Federal Parliament
International community calls on the Federal Parliament, in coordination with the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) and in consultation with the Federal Government of Somalia, the State Governments and other stakeholders to resolve these issues promptly.
The Political Parties Act is part of the fundamental legal process necessary to conduct timely elections. Therefore, they emphasize the importance of prioritizing the review and approval of the amendments made by the Federal Parliament.
