Las Anod Conference Declares North Eastern State as New Federal Member

GOOBJOOG NEWS | LAS ANOD: A regional conference in Las Anod has declared the formation of the North Eastern State of Somalia as a new Federal Member State, in what delegates described as a major step toward deepening Somalia’s federal system.
The announcement was made at the conclusion of the SSC Grand Constitutional Conference, attended by 417 delegates representing traditional elders, civil society, political leaders, and community groups from across the region. The conference also ratified the region’s Constitution unanimously.
The newly declared state, formed under Somalia’s Provisional Federal Constitution, pledges allegiance to national unity and aims to establish interim institutions to govern the territory in line with federal principles.
The Constitution sets out a governance structure covering executive powers, legislative functions, and judicial independence. Organizers said the process was inclusive, consultative, and rooted in broad-based public consensus.
Regional leaders said the move was driven by long-standing aspirations for self-governance and political recognition within Somalia’s federal architecture. The declaration was framed as a peaceful assertion of constitutional rights, not a breakaway attempt.
The announcement comes at a time when Somalia is striving to strengthen its federal framework, address local grievances, and foster national reconciliation amid ongoing security and political challenges.
The next steps for the North Eastern State include forming transitional institutions and initiating formal dialogue with the Federal Government in Mogadishu.
