GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has formally invited a group of former national and regional leaders to take part in high-level consultations aimed at addressing the country’s political and security challenges.

The initiative follows the President’s Eid al-Fitr message on March 30, 2025, in which he called for inclusive national dialogue to tackle pressing issues, including the fight against Al-Shabaab, constitutional reforms, and preparations for upcoming elections.

The talks are set to include former presidents, prime ministers, deputy prime ministers, parliamentary speakers, and former heads of federal member states. The meeting is scheduled for June 15, 2025, and is expected to serve as a platform for gathering input from Somalia’s most experienced statesmen.

“This is a genuine effort to bring all perspectives to the table,” a statement from the presidency said. “The President is committed to listening to grievances and ideas from key stakeholders across the political spectrum.”

Over the past several weeks, President Mohamud has already held preliminary consultations with leaders of registered political parties, civil society actors, and former senior officials. These discussions, officials say, have provided valuable insights into the diverse needs of Somali communities.

The outcomes of the June 15 summit will feed into a meeting of the National Consultative Council (NCC) on June 22, 2025, where federal and state leaders will review the recommendations. Any formal decisions from the NCC may be forwarded to the Federal Parliament for potential legislative or constitutional amendments.

The presidency said the two-step process is designed to ensure both broad consultation and respect for Somalia’s democratic institutions.

The government hopes the process will help unify political voices and reinforce constitutional governance ahead of critical political milestones.
