Somaliland Opposition Demand Caretaker Government
Storyline:National News
A coalition of opposition parties in Somaliland are demanding the establishment of caretaker government when the mandate of the current government expires in June and that no elections are held.
This is after the electoral commission announced new dates for voter registration drive, effectively postponing the election date to more than five months.
The current government headed by President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo is supposed to leave the office in June this year.
The opposition has also presented a list of demands
- President Silanyo should convene a national consultative conference to determine the leadership of the country from 26th June 2015 to the election date. The coalition also calls on the public to rally behind the conference.
- Since we don’t have confidence with those who menaced the elections, and President Silanyo would not heed our call for a conference, we would go ahead with the conference in April to formulate our strategies.
- We warn the senators not to extend their term in office and that of the president.
- We demand from the electoral commission to submit the full schedule of the election, including the exact date elections are to be held.
- If the government would not restrain itself from doing unnecessary public mobilization and would not respond our set demands on time, the opposition parties will be forced to call for a mass action.
