Somaliland warns elders an politicians against Participation in Somalia’s 2016 elections

Traditional elders and politicians hailing from the breakaway Somaliland have been warned not to participate the upcoming elections in the Somalia, the region’s Ministry of information said Thursday.

In press conference held in Hargeisa town, Somaliland’s information minister Osman Abdilahi Sahardid (Adani) accused government of Somalia of interfering the sovereignty of Somaliland.

Somali government has planned to gather traditional elders across Somalia including Somaliland, who will nominate upcoming parliamentary members.

“Somalia government policy towards Somaliland is like a day dream. Somaliland is independent country since 1991 and Somaliland has never attended Somalia elections. Somaliland government only has a mandate of its citizens our community, “Said the Minister of Information

He added “Somalia is violating the previous agreements which Somaliland and Somalia signed in Turkey talks.”
Adani said that the Somaliland’s stance of pebbling statement issued by Somali government, released on 12th April, is to boycott and think about its way forward.

“Somaliland is not part of the elections of Somalia and will not attend as well as it done, “Said the Minister.

Somalia is expected to hold elections for both the Lower and Upper Houses in August this year.

In 1991 the former British Somaliland declares unilateral independence as Somaliland following the ousting of Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre, which plunges the rest of Somalia into anarchy.
