GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Hundreds of people gathered in Mogadishu’s Shangani district on Saturday evening to celebrate Somalia’s Independence and Unity Week, as the country commemorates the 66th anniversary of its independence and unification.

The event brought together government officials, community members, youth groups and cultural performers in a display of national pride and remembrance of Somalia’s struggle for independence.

The gathering was attended by members of the national committee organizing this year’s Independence and Unification Day celebrations, led by Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation Minister Ali Yusuf Hosh.

Cultural performances, patriotic songs and historical presentations featured prominently during the event, highlighting the sacrifices made by Somali independence activists and the country’s journey toward statehood.

The celebrations aim to strengthen national unity, promote patriotism and honor the generations whose efforts helped secure Somalia’s independence and sovereignty.

The commemorations come at a significant moment for Somalia, as the country continues efforts to strengthen state institutions, advance political reforms and improve security while confronting ongoing challenges, including the threat posed by the militant group Al-Shabaab.

Independence Week holds special significance in Somalia’s national calendar, marking the period between June 26, 1960, when British Somaliland gained independence, and July 1, 1960, when it united with the former Italian-administered territory to form the Somali Republic.

Across the country, public gatherings, cultural events and civic activities are being held to commemorate the anniversary and reflect on Somalia’s history, identity and aspirations for the future.

Officials said the celebrations are intended not only to honor the past but also to encourage unity and reconciliation as Somalia continues its efforts toward lasting peace and development.
