Somalis Pack Mogadishu Stadium for Independence Day Football and Festivities

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Thousands of Somalis packed Mogadishu Stadium on Thursday to celebrate the country’s Independence Day, with a lively football match between local giants Heegan and Horseed capping off a day of national pride and cultural showcase.
The event marked the 65th anniversary of the northern regions’ independence from British colonial rule on June 26, 1960, a pivotal milestone in Somalia’s path to sovereignty.
Beyond the high-energy match, the crowd was treated to traditional Somali performances, including horse riding displays and folk games that paid tribute to the country’s nomadic heritage.
Government officials, MPs, and cabinet ministers joined citizens in the stadium, signaling strong state support for the nationwide commemorations.
Their presence alongside cheering fans highlighted a rare moment of unity and optimism in the capital.
The day’s celebrations served as both a remembrance of Somalia’s struggle for self-rule and a call for renewed national cohesion.
