GOOBJOOG NEWS | BAIDOA: Polls are underway across parts of South West State in a historic election being closely watched as Somalia’s most significant step yet toward universal suffrage after decades of indirect voting.

Voting is taking place in 13 districts where multiple political organisations are contesting seats in local councils and regional representative bodies under the country’s expanding one-person, one-vote system.

The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said more than 376,000 voters registered for the elections, including thousands of people with special needs, following months of nationwide registration campaigns and preparations.

Long queues were reported at several polling stations early Friday as residents turned out to cast ballots in what many described as a defining political moment for the region.

Federal and regional authorities deployed heightened security across the participating districts, with officials emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability throughout the voting process.

The election marks the first large-scale direct vote held at federal member state level in Somalia in decades and forms part of the Federal Government of Somalia’s broader push to replace the country’s clan-based electoral model with a universal suffrage system.

The vote comes amid intensified political reforms by the federal government, which has in recent months accelerated voter registration drives, electoral preparations and institutional reforms despite ongoing political tensions and security threats from Al-Shabaab militants.

Officials say the South West election could become a major turning point for Somalia’s democratic transition and may shape preparations for future nationwide one-person, one-vote elections.
