Puntland State to complete Lower House elections today
Somalia’s regional State in northern part of the country is expected to conclude the final phase of Lower House elections later today.
The only remaining five seats of 37 parliamentary seats allocated to the semi-autonomous regional state of Puntland in lower chamber of the federal parliament will be filled on Monday.
FIEIT is working hard to ensure that seats of the Lower House are filled by before the deadline 15th December which would constitute the parliamentary seats required for the house to sit and elect parliament speaker and two deputies.
Elections in Puntland State have so far been orderly and peaceful, with winners being gracious and humble in their victory speech and defeated candidates accepting the outcome.
32 of 37 seats in the upcoming Lower House chamber of Federal Parliament allocated for Puntland state have been so far since the beginning of the ballots in Puntland region.
Puntland, which forms the very tip of the Horn of Africa along the Indian Ocean coast and the Gulf of Aden, recognises the central government in Mogadishu, but wants autonomy within a federation of states.
Three other regional states, Jubbaland, South-West and Hirshabelle States have already concluded the elections of the Lower House as Galmudug states are about to conclude soon.
The electoral process will see a total of 275 members elected to the Lower House.
Both the Lower and Upper Houses of parliament will elect Somalia’s next president in polls due at the end of November.
