GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: House of the People speaker Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, has welcomed a community-led peace initiative aimed at promoting reconciliation and stability in South West State amid ongoing political tensions in the region.

The initiative brings together business leaders, religious scholars and members of the Somali diaspora who have voluntarily formed a committee to support dialogue, strengthen social cohesion and encourage peaceful solutions to disputes affecting the regional state.

During a meeting at his office in Mogadishu, Speaker Nur received proposals from the committee focusing on reconciliation, state-building, peace and stability.

He praised the role of community representatives in promoting unity and supporting efforts to restore trust among different groups in South West State.

The engagement comes against the backdrop of political divisions in South West State following the removal of former regional president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen from power earlier this year.

The leadership dispute has heightened tensions between rival political groups, raising concerns about its potential impact on security, governance and relations between federal and regional authorities.

Community-led reconciliation initiatives are widely regarded as an important avenue for addressing political and clan-based disagreements in Somalia, where religious leaders, traditional elders and business figures have historically played significant roles in mediating disputes.

The committee’s engagement with the Speaker highlights efforts by civil society representatives to contribute to political dialogue and support a peaceful environment for governance and development.

Several members of the Federal Parliament’s House of the People also attended the meeting.

Although no specific agreements or follow-up measures were announced, the discussions underscored the growing involvement of community stakeholders in efforts to promote reconciliation and lasting stability in South West State.
