SSC-Khatumo State Formation Conference: What Happens?

`GOOBJOOG NEWS | LAAS ANOD: Delegates are meeting as of today in Laas Anod in buildup for the official formation of the new Federal Member State in Somalia.

Among senior government officials who have arrived in the town are Commerce Minister Mahmoud Adan Gesood and Senator Zeynab Ismail Tiinbiye—both from SSC regions.

What will the delegates do?

The delegates include traditional elders, politicians, civil society reps, and professionals. Over a couple of days, they will take part in working groups where they will be tasked with drafting key components of the governance system, including leadership roles, administrative mechanisms, and constitutional alignment with the Provisional Constitution.

A core objective is to confirm formal leadership, transitioning from an interim administration to a fully recognized federal member state—with appointments ratified during the conference. The conference will define the governance roadmap, outlining federal–regional cooperation, administrative boundaries, and service delivery structures.

They will also select the first parliament and elect a new president to replace the interim president Abdikhadir Ahmed Aw‑Ali (Firdhiye).
