AU Commission chair condemns attack on AMISOM soldiers in Somalia
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has condemned the attack on Burundian soldiers under AMISOM in the Hirshabelle region last Saturday that killed 12 soldiers and injured others.
In a statement Monday, Mahamat also paid tribute to the Burundian soldiers ‘who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty to protect and support our Somali brothers and sisters and their national institutions’.
He also condoled with the bereaved families and the Government of the Republic of Burundi and wished a quick recovery to the injured AMISOM peacekeepers.
Al-Shabaab which claimed credit for the attack Saturday ambushed the AU forces in Jowhar inflicting casualties. The attack on the soldiers came amid heightened Al-Shabaab offensives in Jowhar and Bala’d killing government officials and civilians.
