Storyline:World

KHARTOUM, Xinhua: The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Sunday shot down two drones targeting an airport in Gedaref State in eastern Sudan, the independent Sudan Tribune news portal reported.

“The two drones were downed before they hit targets,” the report quoted unnamed military sources as saying.

According to the report, the drones were launched from the west of the state’s namesake capital city of Gedaref and were spotted near Wad Zayed Airport in the Al-Shawak area.

Wad Zayed Airport, housing a military base, is located some 35 km east of Gedaref city.

This incident is the second of its kind in the state following the SAF’s downing of two drones targeting army positions on April 9.

The conflict between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which broke out on April 15, 2023, has so far resulted in 15,550 fatalities and 8.7 million people displaced, according to the latest situation report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
