GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Sweden will maintain its focus on state-building, economic development, and resilience in Somalia, integrating human rights, gender equality, and conflict-sensitive approaches across its development programs, Ambassador Hans Henric Lundquist has said.

The ambassador emphasized Sweden’s long-term vision of a peaceful and secure Somalia, with improved economic opportunities and stronger community resilience to climate-related shocks.

“A safe and secure Somalia where the population has economic opportunities are long-term goals,” he said, highlighting the importance of investing in local resilience and peacebuilding.

Sweden’s collaboration with UNDP has supported governance reforms, climate resilience, and national development planning, producing measurable results through initiatives such as the Somalia Joint Fund (SJF) and the National Transformation Plan (NTP).

Projects have included climate-shock management systems, integrated water resources management, charcoal reduction, disaster risk reduction, and early warning mechanisms.

Through these programs, Sweden and UNDP have also integrated climate-security considerations into community reconciliation efforts, promoting environmental peacebuilding and addressing climate-related security risks on the ground.

Sweden, one of the top non-core contributors to UNDP globally, continues to fund initiatives in transformational governance, climate adaptation, and climate-security mechanisms, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Somalia’s sustainable development and stability.
