GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, opened the East African Community Economic Cooperation Conference today, stating that the people and government of Somalia are committed to good neighborliness and strengthening regional cooperation in line with mutual interests.

The President highlighted that the Somali government is determined to encourage investment and ensure that governments share existing opportunities legally. He underscored that Ethiopia’s ambition to claim part of Somalia’s waters undermines cooperation and exchange between governments, and jeopardizes peace and stability in the region.

“I want to make it clear to the Somali people and the international community that our dispute with Ethiopia is over their illegal attempt to access our waters. We want them to reach our waters through legal means, just as Uganda accesses Kenya’s waters and Ethiopia itself accesses Djibouti’s waters.”

The conference was attended by members of the Cabinet, economic experts, ambassadors, and representatives from national universities. It showcased Somalia’s plan within the East African Community, particularly the opportunities available to businesses and civil society.

Experts also conducted in-depth analyses on how to improve trade and social relations between Somalia and other East African Community countries.

In his speech, the President emphasized the importance of cooperation and unity to develop the national economy and create sustainable employment opportunities.
