Thousands of Somali Pilgrims Arrive in Medina Ahead of Hajj

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MEDINA: Thousands of Somali pilgrims have begun arriving in the holy city of Medina ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, in what officials say marks one of the largest Somali contingents in recent years.
According to Somalia’s Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, an estimated 11,500 Somalis are expected to perform Hajj this year.
Departures are taking place from key airports across the country, including Mogadishu, Hargeisa, and Bosaso, with flights scheduled through May 31.
Pilgrims, many visibly moved upon reaching the holy land, were welcomed warmly by local authorities and community organizers.
The Ministry, in coordination with the Hajj Operations Committee and Somalia’s embassy in Saudi Arabia, has pledged to ensure a safe and dignified pilgrimage for all Somali nationals, emphasizing proper guidance and logistical support throughout the Hajj season of 1446.
Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is expected to draw over two million Muslims from around the world this year, in one of the largest religious gatherings globally.
