Three killed, property worth millions of dollars destroyed in Mogadishu market inferno
Three people have been confirmed dead and property worth millions of US dollars destroyed after an inferno razed over one hundred shops in Mogadishu’s main market, Bakaro on Monday morning.
The fire that started at about 3:am destroyed property including shopping malls and stores,mobile phone shops and clothes stalls.
Mogadishu Mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimale who visited the scene said property of unknown value was destroyed in the inferno.
“The fire started early Monday morning and caused human casualties including death of traders and property loss. It is a tragedy and we will help those who lost their businesses in this fire,” said Jim’aale.
Jim’aale pledged that Mogadishu administration will make safe way to handle such problems and measures to prevent such tragedies in future.
Our correspondent at scene said the fire caused the death of three traders and completely burnt down three sections of the open-air market including Khalifa section.
“Bodies of three men who were trapped in the rubble while attempting to salvage their goods have been recovered,” said Goobjoog News correspondent.
The fire was reportedly triggered off by a faulty electrical connection.
