Total lockdown enforced on major roads for 2nd day ahead of elections of deputy speakers of the House

Most of the major roads in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu are blocked for the second day ahead of elections of the deputy speakers of the federal parliament which will take place on Thursday. on 12th of January.

Residents in Mogadishu say Units of Police forces and National Intelligence and Security Agency were put on high alert and are patrolling some of the main roads that lead to the parliament building and Villa Somalia, the presidential palace.

The roads blocked include Maka al Mukarama, Sayidka, KM4 junction, Zoppe and the Airport Road.

Public transport is restricted to access these blocked roads as it’s only allowed vehicles for government officials and pedestrians to use the main streets.

The closure of these roads has had its worst effect on students and workers going to schools and business that are miles away from their residents.

Over 200 recently sworn in Somali parliament members will pick the two deputy speakers.

Abdiweli Sheikh Ibrahim Muday.

Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir.

Jaylani Nuur Ikar.

Khadija Mohamed Diriye.

Khalid maow Abdikadir.

Saeed Hussein Eid.

Names the candidates contesting as 2nd deputy speaker are as  follows:

1. Abdikadir Shekh Ali who is the outgoing minister for religious.
2. Mahad Abdalla Awad,  former  second deputy speaker of the 9th parliament.
3. Abdullahi Godah Barre, Former Somali minister for Justice.
4. Burhan Aden Omar,
5. Abdullahi Husein Ali.
6. Abdiweli Mohamed Qanyare.
7. Hussein Abdi Elmi.
8. Elmi Mohamed Noor.
9. Abdirahman Aden Ibrahim
10. Maryan Ahmed Harun.
