Turkey to Help Strengthen Somalia’s Immigration and Border Security Systems
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Turkey will support efforts to modernise Somalia’s immigration and border management systems as part of a broader partnership aimed at improving governance and security, the Turkish ambassador said after talks with Somali officials.
Ambassador Alper Aktas met with Mustafa Sheikh Ali Duhulow, Director-General of the Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency, where the two sides discussed technical cooperation and long-term plans to improve Somalia’s immigration services.
Aktas said Turkey would assist in building the agency’s operational capacity, including border control and management systems.
Turkey’s engagement comes as part of its wider development presence in Somalia, which includes managing Mogadishu’s port and Aden Adde International Airport, two key economic lifelines for the country.
Turkish involvement in infrastructure and public services has been credited with boosting economic activity and improving essential state functions.
Relations between the two nations deepened in 2011 when Turkey delivered large-scale humanitarian assistance during Somalia’s famine. Since then, Ankara has expanded support to military training, public administration and economic development.
Somali officials say the new cooperation on immigration will help strengthen state institutions and improve national security. The government expects Turkey’s technical expertise to accelerate ongoing reforms aimed at creating a more efficient and transparent immigration system.
