Turkish Forces Visit Somalia to Boost Counterterrorism Efforts

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A delegation from Turkey’s Special Forces visited Mogadishu, holding talks with Somali security officials aimed at strengthening counterterrorism cooperation and enhancing Somalia’s ability to address regional security threats.
The Turkish officers toured the Haramcad Camp – home to Somalia’s elite special police unit, and met with Somali Special Forces Commander Abdihakiin Eeldheer to discuss expanding joint training programs and operational collaboration.
Somali officials say the visit is part of broader efforts to build a more capable and self-reliant national security force, with Turkey playing a key role as a strategic partner.
“This engagement reflects our shared commitment to combating terrorism and securing the region,” Commander Eeldheer said. “It supports our ongoing mission to professionalize our forces and strengthen Somalia’s stability.”
The visit comes at a time when Somali forces are stepping up operations against al-Shabaab militants, who continue to pose a threat across the Horn of Africa. Turkish support, particularly through elite force training and military advisory roles, has been vital to Somalia’s progress in building a more responsive and modern security apparatus.
The visit is also meant to deepen cooperation as a stabilizing factor not only for Somalia, but also for neighboring countries facing cross-border security risks.
Turkey has significantly expanded its defense and development footprint in Somalia over the past decade, including operating one of its largest overseas military training bases in Mogadishu.
