Two rival clans sign peace agreement in Mudug region
Two feuding clans in Af-Barwaaqo village of Eastern Mudug region on Friday signed a peace covenant ending a decade-old conflict that caused a dozen fatalities on both sides.
Leaders and traditional elders of the clans, who featured in more than a dozen encounters in years past, signed a peace agreement.
The settlement of the war of the clans was jointly brokered by traditional elders led by sultan Abdi Madoobe and officials from Mudug local administration.
Madoobe welcomed the decision, saying the delegates from both sides had come up with a number of recommendations, which will help resolve the long standing conflict in the area.
“We have all agreed that cessation of hostilities be observed. Henceforth, people in this area should live in harmony and lead prosperous life,” said Madoobe.
The clans have been involved in clan fighting for years over power sharing and control of resources.
The fights have led to loss of lives, displacement of families and destruction of property.
A peaceful resolution to the conflict will help stabilize Mudug region, as the country healing from civil war in 1990s that claimed lives of thousands of people
