U.S. Conducts Airstrikes on ISIS Targets in Somalia’s Bari Region

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The United States military, in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, carried out two airstrikes targeting ISIS-affiliated militants in Somalia’s northeastern Bari region, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said on Monday.
The first airstrike was launched on May 31, approximately 75 kilometers south of Bosaso, followed by a second strike on June 1, about 72 kilometers south of the same city.
AFRICOM said the operations aimed to degrade the operational capabilities of ISIS-Somalia and disrupt its ability to plan and carry out attacks against civilians, Somali security forces, and international partners.
“These precision strikes are part of ongoing efforts to deny safe haven to terrorist groups operating in the region,” AFRICOM said in a statement.
The Somali government welcomed the support and reiterated its commitment to fighting terrorism in all forms. Officials emphasized that cooperation with international allies remains critical in restoring long-term peace and stability.
“The Federal Government of Somalia expresses its appreciation for the continued partnership with the United States and remains resolute in its efforts to eliminate extremist threats,” a government spokesperson said.
ISIS-Somalia, a smaller but persistent faction compared to the Al-Shabaab insurgency, has claimed responsibility for several attacks in recent years, particularly in Puntland’s mountainous areas.
