U.S. Urges Compromise as Federal–Opposition Talks Stall in Mogadishu

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Embassy of the United States in Mogadishu has urged Somali leaders to resume dialogue after talks between the federal government and the Golaha Mustaqbalka ended without agreement.

In a statement, the embassy said compromise and continued engagement were essential, encouraging leaders to persist with negotiations despite the difficulties.

“Dialogue and compromise are hard, but necessary,” the statement said, calling on Somali stakeholders to maintain efforts toward consensus at what it described as a sensitive political moment.

The impasse followed a meeting at Villa Somalia between Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and members of the Golaha Mustaqbalka, where discussions reportedly stalled over key issues including federal-level elections and polls in three allied federal member states.

The latest setback comes amid broader debates over Somalia’s electoral process and the path toward universal suffrage, as political actors weigh competing visions for the country’s governance framework.
