U.S. Issues Fresh Travel Advisory for Kenya Citing Security Concerns

GOOBJOOG NEWS | NAIROBI: The United States Embassy has issued a new travel advisory, warning its citizens residing in or traveling to Kenya about heightened security risks, including crime, terrorism, civil unrest, banditry, and kidnapping.
In the advisory, the Embassy specifically cautioned against traveling to certain areas, highlighting concerns over violent crime and limited law enforcement capacity to respond effectively to incidents.
In Nairobi County, U.S. citizens have been advised to exercise increased caution in Eastleigh and Kibera due to a high prevalence of crime and kidnapping. The advisory warns that violent crimes, such as armed carjackings, muggings, home invasions, and kidnappings, can occur at any time.
“Emergency medical and fire services are limited. Avoid traveling after dark due to crime and poor traffic safety,” the advisory stated.
The Embassy also noted the rise in motorcycle-related crimes, where thieves on motorbikes snatch valuables from unsuspecting victims and quickly escape. These incidents commonly occur in crowded areas, particularly when individuals are distracted.
The advisory further warned against travel to Kenya’s border regions near Somalia, including Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Tana River, and the coastal areas north of Malindi, due to the threat of terrorism and kidnapping. Additionally, West Pokot and Turkana counties were flagged as unsafe due to ongoing banditry.
The U.S. government has restricted its personnel from traveling to Level 4 risk areas, citing kidnapping and terrorism threats.
Terrorism Threats
The Embassy raised concerns over potential terrorist attacks, noting that past incidents have targeted public spaces such as malls, hotels, places of worship, schools, and government buildings. The advisory warned that such attacks often occur without warning and may involve armed assaults, bombings, grenade attacks, or kidnappings.
Additionally, the Embassy highlighted security risks along Kenya’s northern border with Ethiopia, specifically within 50 kilometers of the Marsabit and Turkana regions, due to cross-border incursions.
U.S. citizens were also urged to remain vigilant during demonstrations, strikes, and political or economic protests, as these events can quickly turn volatile and lead to violence. Travelers were advised to stay informed, avoid large gatherings, and remain alert in tourist-frequented areas.
The Embassy advised its citizens to comply with security measures, refrain from resisting robbery attempts, and stay updated through local media. Furthermore, U.S. travelers were encouraged to review contingency plans, including backup arrangements for leaving the country in case of emergencies.
