U.S lauds President Mohamud’s war against Al-Shabaab

GOOBJOOG NEWS|WASHINGTON: The U.S government has praised President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s efforts in the fight against extremism in Somalia and pledged its continued support to ensure peace and stability in the Horn of Africa nation.

U.S Defence Secretary Austin Lloyd made the remarks following a meeting with President Mohamud at the Pentagon on Wednesday night local time.

Secretary Lloyd ‘praised President Hassan Sheikh’s leadership in reinvigorating the Somali security forces and proactively engaging with the U.S. and international partners,” a statement from Pentagon said.

The leaders discussed the work that President Hassan Sheikh’s administration has done to counter violent extremism in Somalia and the Department’s support to Somalia’s security forces.,” Pentagon said. “The two exchanged views on the security outlook for the Horn of Africa in light of climate shocks, humanitarian issues, conflict, and the threat of violent extremism.”

Secretary Austin reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to countering violent extremism and expressed appreciation for President Hassan Sheikh’s administration’s willingness to host U.S. forces

President Mohamud said he discussed with his host a partnership & commitment to securing our future from international terrorism. The USA is a valuable partner in Somalia’s national security.

President Mohamud is expected to meet other senior US government officials and the leadership of IMF as from today as part of his visit before heading to New York for the UN General Assembly.
