U.S. Reaffirms ‘One Somalia’ Policy at UN, Rejects Recognition of Somaliland
GOOBJOOG NEWS | NEW YORK: The United States has reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, telling the United Nations Security Council that its policy toward the Horn of Africa “remains unchanged” and that it does not recognise Somaliland as an independent state.
Speaking during an emergency Security Council briefing on rising regional tensions, the U.S. delegation said Washington recognises only one Somalia and considers the Federal Government in Mogadishu the sole legitimate authority over the country’s entire territory.
The statement was seen as a clear signal aimed at dispelling speculation of a possible policy shift, amid heightened diplomatic activity around the self-declared Somaliland region, which has sought international recognition but remains unrecognised by the United Nations.
U.S. officials said their position aligns with that of the African Union, the European Union and the A3 Plus group of African states at the UN, all of which back Somalia’s unity and oppose moves that could fragment the country.
For Somalia, the reaffirmation strengthens its diplomatic position at a critical moment, reinforcing international support for its territorial integrity and underlining Washington’s continued backing of stability in the Horn of Africa and the strategically important Red Sea corridor.
