GOOBJOOG NEWS | WASHINGTON: The United States has said it has not changed its policy on the recognition of Somaliland, dismissing speculation that Washington may be considering a shift in its long-standing position.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson said the United States continues to support the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and has no new policy regarding Somaliland’s status.

The spokesperson said Washington maintains working-level engagement with Somaliland and other regional administrations in Somalia, focusing on areas such as security cooperation, development assistance, humanitarian support and regional stability.

However, the official said there were no plans to deepen or expand that engagement beyond existing policy frameworks.

The comments come amid renewed debate over Somaliland’s political future and increased diplomatic activity by the region, developments that have prompted speculation about possible changes in international positions.
