US Warns Citizens to Avoid Three Ethiopian Regions Amid Security Risks

Storyline:World

GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: The United States has warned its citizens in Ethiopia about reports of possible long-range attacks targeting Ethiopian military installations, urging Americans to avoid three northern regions where armed conflict and unrest have intensified.

The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa said it was aware of reports of possible attacks on military sites on several occasions in October, without providing further details about the alleged incidents or identifying those responsible.

It advised U.S. citizens not to travel to Amhara, Tigray or Afar regions, including the tourist destination of Lalibela. Americans already in the areas were told to leave if it was safe to do so or remain sheltered until conditions improve.

The embassy also warned that internet and telephone services could be disrupted and advised travellers to monitor local media and remain in contact with airlines for updates on flight operations.

The warning comes amid renewed fighting and political tensions in northern Ethiopia, with the security situation described by Washington as fluid. Addis Ababa itself was described as stable, although the U.S. urged its citizens to reconsider travel to Ethiopia because of the wider security environment.

The embassy also cautioned about misinformation circulating on social media and urged Americans to rely on credible news sources for updates.
