UN, AU to partner with Somalia in the security transition process
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: United Nations and the African Union have agreed to combine efforts with other international partners in ensuring a smooth transition of security responsibilities from ATMIS to the Somali National Army.
United Nations (UN) representative Catriona Laing, while meeting African Union officials led by Director of Conflict Management at the AU Peace and Security Department Sarjoh Bah underscored the shared commitment between the UN and AU in supporting the transition process.
The African Union, delegation by Sarjoh Bah reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s security transition adding that the AU has played a crucial role in promoting peace, stability, and governance in Somalia through its African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
He further emphasized the AU’s dedication to working closely with the UN and other international partners to ensure a sustainable and effective security apparatus in Somalia.
Both sides noted the importance of adopting an inclusive approach, community engagement, and the respect for human rights in the security transition process.
They expressed optimism over the progress made thus far, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead and stressed the need for sustained efforts in capacity building, strengthening institutions, and fostering collaboration between the UN, AU, and the Somali government.
