UN Day Marked in Ethiopia With Call to Establish Equitable Global Governance System
ADDIS ABABA: The United Nations missions, the African Union (AU), and the diplomatic communities in Ethiopia celebrated the UN Day on Thursday at the premises of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, with a call for establishing a more equitable and responsive global governance system.
The UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter to promote peace, security, development, and human rights across the world.
Speaking on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia Ramiz Alakbarov highlighted the need to ease tension, eradicate poverty, and spur sustainable development across the world.
“In today’s troubled world, hope is not enough. Hope requires determined action and multilateral solutions for peace, shared prosperity, and a thriving planet,” said Alakbarov, urging countries to renew their commitment to addressing global challenges and fostering international cooperation.
He stressed the importance of working together to tackle poverty, promote sustainable development, support vulnerable populations, and address climate change.
Advisor on Education to the Chairperson of the AU Commission Gaokgakala Daniel said there is a need to strengthen the partnership between the AU and the UN to achieve their 2063 and 2030 agendas, respectively.
Daniel called for reforms within the UN governance system to ensure the global body better represents the diverse realities of its member states by advocating a new global social contract.
“The United Nations must reflect the world’s reality today. Reform to the United Nations must occur for it to serve all the people of the world equitably now and in the future,” he noted.
Director-General of International Organization Affairs at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Semunegus Hailegiorgis called on the UN to undergo reforms to effectively respond to security and development challenges in the world.
He further emphasized the significance of closing funding gaps and highlighted Ethiopia’s election to the UN Human Rights Council as an opportunity for deeper collaboration.
