Storyline:World

GOOBJOOG NEWS/NEWYORK: The UNSC wil today, March 30, approve both the mandate and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), as AMISOM’s mandate comes to a wrap on March 31.

The African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) will be replaced by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on April 1st, as agreed by the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN) and the Somali government.

Once approved by the UN Security Council, ATMIS will in the next two years be focused on rebuilding the country’s ground and air forces, the intelligence and security-related institutions in preparation for their takeover of the country’s overall security.

The details of who will contribute troops or personnel remain undeclared but it is assumed the current force contributors will retain their soldiers, albeit reduced numbers.

One and a half-decade of AMISOM’s operations on Somali soil will come to an end tomorrow, with ATMIS expected to take the stage on 1st April 2022. Some of its tasks include fighting Al-Shabaab, ensuring security, improving the capacity of security forces, bringing justice and supporting peace and reconciliation.
