UN welcomes the establishment of Security Council by Somali leaders

UN Envoy to Somalia, Michael Keating on Monday commended Somalia’s federal and state governments for inking an agreement to form a National Security Council.

Following a three day meeting in Mogadishu, leaders also agreed to establish State Level Security Council headed by the respective state presidents

“This agreement marks a major milestone for Somalia. It is a cornerstone of the federal state building process and is a basis upon which strengthened security can be built,” said Keating.

NSC whose members will include regional leaders will be headed by President Farmajo.

Keating said that the international community is committed to supporting the Government’s priorities.

The leaders agreed to conduct a national census based on actual head count.

The communiqué issued by the leaders joined their hands to aid drought-stricken Somalia avert a potential famine.

About half of the Somali population is in need of assistance, including 330,000 children.
