UNESCO Chief Condemns Somali Journalist’s Murder

GOOBJOOG NEWS MOGADISHU: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of journalist Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan in the Abudwak district, Galmudug region in Somalia on 13 March 2024.

“I condemn the killing of Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan. I call on the authorities to investigate the circumstances and motive of this killing and prosecute those responsible. Journalists play a vital role in informing populations and must never the target of such violence,” UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said.

Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan was a renowned reporter who worked at the Somali National Television station.

He was also known for his humanitarian and peace activism work in Abudwaq and across Galmudug State in Somalia.

He was reportedly shot and killed after an argument with an armed guard at his workplace.

Azoulay in his statement further stated that UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
