The UN refugee agency UNHCR has confirmed one of its staff was killed in the July 26 twin explosions near the airport in Mogadishu which killed 12 people.

In a statement Tuesday, UNHCR said Ahmed Mohamed Hassan who until his death was working as a Protection Associate was killed in the attack while some of his colleagues sustained light injuries.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi mourned the death of Ahmed adding his death pointed to the risks UNHCR staff are exposed especially in conflict zones.

“The tragic loss of Ahmed highlights the risks taken by colleagues working in the world’s most complex and insecure field locations to bring life-saving protection and support to those in need, and their deep courage and commitment,” said Grandi.

Shortly after the July 26 explosions, another twin explosions went off at the CID headquarters in Mogadishu, some four days later killing another 12 people and injuring 11 others.
