UNICEF warns of malnutrition for children in Somalia
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned against malnutrition at this time in Somalia.
Following the recent flooding in the country UNICEF and its partners have warned against malnutrition children in Somalia whom are severely malnourished.
The United Nations spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said that about 1.25 million children are at risk of suffering from malnutrition this year.
He said “half of the five-year-old children with 1.25 million could face malnutrition, including 232,000 current malnourished children caused by the heavy flooding in the country.”
The spokesman also said the floods that hit Somalia in April also resulted in closure of 22 centers to scourge 6,000 Somali IDPs.
Malnutrition is not new to Somalia, however the country needs to alarm to the humanitarian agencies to get ready for the malnutrition cases that is coming up to face the country.
UNICEF currently supports feeding programmes in Central and Southern Somalia. These centers treat about 15,000 malnourished children each month. But in order to scale up its activities and reach the thousands of additional children at risk, issues of security must be tackled.
Finally, UNICEF says “it fears that cholera, malaria and measles can deteriorate in the flood-affected areas”.
