Unknown warplanes destroy Al-Shabaab convoy in Gedo
Unidentified fighter jets have bombed Al-Shabaab convoy in Somalia’s southern region, Gedo, residents and military commander said Wednesday.
Residents say the warplanes dropped the bombs that destroyed Al-Shabaab convoy and killed several fighters near El-Adde town.
“We heard explosions in a rural area near this town (El-Adde) and several fighters travelling killed during the attack,” says a local resident in El-Adde town.
Abas Ibrahim Gurey, Somali National Army (SNA) commander in Gedo confirmed the attack saying Al-Shabaab convoy with more vehicles was engaged by unknown war planes.
“The jets raided the convoy in the desert area where the militants have their bases,” said Gurey.
Kenya and US jets have often carried out attacks against the group which fights to overthrow the western backed Somali government.
Kenya sent troops to neighbouring Somalia in mid October, 2011 to tackle the security threats and kidnappings against aid workers and attacks on tourists by Al-Shabaab.
