UNSC slams terrorist attacks in Mogadishu and Beletweyne

GOOBJOOG NEWS|NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the Al-Shabaab terrorist attacks that took place in Mogadishu Airport and Beledweyne town on 23 March 2022, that led to the death of over 50 people. 

The Security Council members expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Somalia and wished a speedy and full recovery to those injured.

Somali security forces and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) personnel were recognized and honoured by the Security Council members for the sacrifices made during the attack, and throughout AMISOM’s 15-year deployment in Somalia.

The Security Council called for the arrest of perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of such despicable acts of terrorism, urging all States to work hand-in-hand with the Federal Government of Somalia and all other relevant authorities in this regard.

The Security Council members also called on all Somali leaders to work together on critical national issues, including conclusion of the ongoing electoral process, the fight against terrorism and responding to the grave humanitarian crisis developing in Somalia.

Finally, the members of the Security Council reaffirmed their respect for the sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity and unity of Somalia.

Twin bombings in Beletweyne led to the death of 48 people, with108 others left with injuries. Six people were also confirmed dead in the Halane camp attack in Mogadishu, with Police spokesman Colonel Abdifatah stating that the six included 5 foreigners and one AMISOM peacekeeper
