UNSOM and AMISOM laud electoral consultative forums in Somalia

The United Nations in Somalia and African Mission in Somalia AMISOM, have hailed the just concluded two days consultative forums in Somalia on the electoral options for 2016.

In separate statements, the two bodies called the process a success and singled out the turn out and participation of Somalis in the Mogadishu, Baidoa, Kismayo, Garowe and Adado as a step towards an all inclusive political process.

UN Special envoy to Somalia Nicholas Kay said while one-person one-vote elections may not be possible in 2016, this consultative process facilitates the participation of a wider segment of Somali society in deciding on what the most appropriate and feasible electoral process for 2016 will be.

“Over the past two days, Somalia spoke.  Somalis across the country gathered and discussed the four options for the 2016 electoral process that have been proposed.  In doing so, they upheld a fundamental principle of Somali society and politics, that of open deliberation among all stakeholders, in the manner of discussions under the Qoraac tree,” said SRSG Kay.

Kay noted that the active engagement and participation of Somalis from all walks of life across the country is in itself an important expression of democratic values.

AMISOM on its part lauded the government of Somalia for ‘the organization, unity of purpose, broad representation and valuable contributions at the consultative meetings held across Somalia.’

“The large numbers demonstrate the determination by the people of Somalia to participate in shaping the future of their country. It also demonstrates the spirit of inclusivity and conducive political environment being enjoyed in the country,” said AMISOM in a statement.

The two days consultative forums were aimed at giving the public a chance to discuss and present their views on the best possible option for the 2016 elections. The National Consultative Forum, which is spearheading the process has proposed four electoral options upon which one will be settled for.

Kay said there will be further consultations in the coming days to reach out to the few remaining communities followed by a second plenary meeting of the National Consultative Forum in Mogadishu.

The Forum will deliberate and agree on the final option in readiness for the elections in August 2016.
