UPDATE: 13 people killed in Galkaayo twin explosions
At least 13 people have been killed in twin bomb explosions which hit a local government quarters in Galkaayo which lies on the Puntland side.
Goobjoog News correspondent in the town said among those killed are police officers, government officials and traders who were within the vicinity.
Details of the explosions still remain scanty but initial reports point to twin explosions in succession.
The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia UNSOM has condemned the attacks. #UNSOM strongly condemns explosions in #Gaalkacyo today aimed at local gov’t office. Terrorist attacks will not stop 2016 electoral process,” said UNSOM in a tweet.
The militant group Al-Shabaab which has regularly claimed responsibility for such attacks is known to use vehicle borne improvised explosive devices, VBIED.
Our correspondent reports the explosions were massive and its impact could be felt from a distance across the town which shares borders with Galmudug state.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.
